The Notre Dame Alumni Club of Staten Island teamed up with the students and administration of Msgr. Farrell High School on Staten Island and Xaverian High School of Brooklyn for a one-day food drive Dec. 27 that collected 700 food items to distribute to needy Staten Island families. Most of the food was donated by students of the two high schools and by alumni association members.

The Alumni Club organized the drive, dubbed the Second Day of Christmas Bread of Life Food Drive, to celebrate the Fighting Irish’s appearance in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium Dec. 28. The Irish defeated Rutgers 29-16 in the game.

The lobby of Msgr. Farrell High School was used as the drive’s staging area. Sean Egan, a senior at Msgr. Farrell, and Kyle Kramer, a Xaverian student who is a Staten Island resident, helped coordinate the effort. David Griswold, Xaverian alumnus, class of 2009, also assisted in the drive.

“I could not have been more proud of these fine young men who gave up a morning of their Christmas holiday to help collect food for people in need,” said Joe Delaney, director of the University of Notre Dame Alumni Club of Staten Island.

“These students helped Notre Dame make a truly significant contribution to people in need on Staten Island in more ways than just a football game at Yankee Stadium.”

The food was delivered to the food pantry at St. Mary of the Assumption parish in the Port Richmond section of Staten Island.
