Sister Janet Capone, O.P.

Sister Janet Capone, O.P., a New York native who was in her 61st year with the Adrian Dominican Congregation in Adrian, Mich., died July 29 at the Lourdes Senior Community in Waterford, Mich. She was 80. Sister Janet, formerly known as Sister Mary Leonard, served at Marymount College in Tarrytown, 1977-1978, as a teacher and officer worker. She also ministered in elementary and secondary education in Pensacola, West Palm Beach and Tampa, Fla., 1957-1976. She spent six years in California as vice president of sponsorship at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz, 2005-2011. After serving as a counselor at HRS Adult Protective Services in Orlando, Fla., for two years, she served the congregation as the administrator of the Dominican Life Center, 1996-1998, and as prioress of the congregation, 1998-2004. In addition, she served for 13 years in St. Louis as director of Emmaus Community, an inter-congregational center established to assist in the personal growth and development of women religious, 1983-1996. Born in New York, she entered the Adrian Dominican Congregation in 1955 and made final vows in 1962. She earned a bachelor’s degree in French and a master’s in guidance counseling. She is survived by a sister, Carole Frechette. A Funeral Mass was offered Aug. 6 in St. Catherine Chapel at the congregation site in Adrian. Burial was at the congregation cemetery. more
