13 Priests Appointed as Parochial Vicars

Thirteen priests have been assigned to serve as parochial vicars of parishes in the archdiocese, the Cardinal’s Office has announced.

Ten of the appointments became effective Aug. 1, and the appointments of Father Robert Ginel, Father Shane Johnson, L.C., and Father John Palatucci will take effect Sept. 1.

Father Louis Anderson, who had served as parochial vicar at St. Lucy’s, the Bronx, since 2011, has been assigned to St. Benedict’s, the Bronx. He previously served at Assumption, Peekskill. He was ordained in 2007.

Father James Borstelmann, who had served as pastor of St. Colman’s, East Kingston, since 2011 and previously was administrator there for six years, has been assigned to the merged parish of St. Catherine Laboure-St. Colman, Lake Katrine and East Kingston. He was pastor of St. Joseph’s, Croton Falls, 1991-2003. He served as parochial vicar at the following parishes: St. Joseph’s, Bronxville; St. John’s, Kingsbridge, the Bronx; and St. Catharine, Blauvelt. He was ordained in 1967.

Father Herbert DeGaris, who had served as administrator of St. Patrick’s, Highland Mills, since 2013, has been assigned to Immaculate Conception, Stony Point. He previously served as parochial vicar at the following parishes: St. Joseph’s, Bronxville; St. Patrick’s, Yorktown Heights; St. Catharine’s, Blauvelt; St. Gregory Barbarigo, Garnerville; and Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, Manhattan. He was ordained in 1991.

Father Robert Ginel, who had served as parochial vicar of Sacred Heart, Suffern, since last year, has been assigned to St. Patrick’s, Highland Mills. He previously was parochial vicar of Holy Cross, the Bronx, 2008-2014. He was pastor of St. Peter’s, Monticello, 1995-2007, and administrator there, 1994-1995. He also was parochial vicar at St. Mary and St. Andrew, Ellenville, and Holy Name of Jesus, Manhattan. He was ordained in 1978.

Father Donald Haggerty, who most recently had served in the Archdiocese of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, has been assigned to St. Agnes, Manhattan. He was spiritual director at St. Joseph’s Seminary, Dunwoodie, 1998-2011, and was on the faculty of Mount St. Mary’s Seminary, Emmitsburg, Md., 1995-1998. He did doctoral studies in moral theology in Rome. He served as a parochial vicar at Holy Spirit and Sacred Heart, both in the Bronx. He was ordained in 1989.

Father John Knapp, who had served as pastor of St. Gabriel’s, the Bronx, since 2007, has been assigned to St. Theresa of the Infant Jesus, the Bronx. He was pastor of Our Lady of Solace, the Bronx, 1995-2007, where he had served as administrator for two years. He served as parochial vicar at St. Columba’s, Hopewell Junction; St. Denis-St. Columba, Hopewell Junction; and Our Lady of Refuge, the Bronx. He was ordained in 1986.

Father Kazimierz Kowalski, who had served as pastor of Our Lady of Good Counsel, Manhattan, since 2003, returns to St. Agnes, Manhattan, where he had served from 1996 to 2003. He was administrator of St. Francis of Assisi, Newburgh, 1995-1996. He also was parochial vicar at Blessed Sacrament, New Rochelle, and St. Joseph’s, Yorkville, Manhattan. He was ordained in 1991.

 

            Father Shane Johnson, L.C., who has been a youth minister at St. Peter’s, Yonkers, since 2012, has been assigned to St. Anthony of Padua, the Bronx. He was on the faculty of Our Lady of Thornwood formation center, 2009-2012, and also was on the staff of the National Catholic Register. He was ordained for the Legionaries of Christ in 2009.

Msgr. Gabriel LaPaz, who had served as administrator of St. Gabriel’s, New Rochelle, since last year, has been assigned to the merged parish of St. Gabriel-St. Joseph, New Rochelle. He served as pastor of Incarnation, Manhattan, 1996-2014, and also served as regional vicar of North Manhattan. He was parochial vicar of Incarnation, 1985-1991, and St. Peter’s, Haverstraw, 1979-1985.  He served as a judge on the Metropolitan Tribunal after he received his licentiate in sacred theology (canon law) after studying in Rome. He was ordained in 1978 and named a monsignor in 1999.

Father Omumuawuike Madu, who had served as parochial vicar at Holy Family, the Bronx, since 2013, has been assigned to the merged parish of St. Brendan-St. Ann, the Bronx. He was a hospital chaplain at New York-Presbyterian, 2009-2013, and He was ordained for the Claretian Missionaries in Nigeria in 1996 and was incardinated into the archdiocese in April.

Father Peter Meehan, who had served as pastor of Our Lady of the Rosary, Manhattan, since 1999, has been assigned to Our Saviour-Chapel of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary-St. Stephen-Our Lady of the Scapular in Manhattan. He also served as pastor of St. Emeric’s, Manhattan, 1987-1999, and was administrator of St. Mary’s, Haverstraw, 1986-1987. Before that he served in the University Apostolate for 14 years, serving as chaplain at the College of Mount St. Vincent, NYU and Bronx Community College. He served as parochial vicar at St. John’s, Kingsbridge, the Bronx, and St. Teresa’s, Manhattan. He was ordained in 1968.

Father John Palatucci, who has served as parochial vicar of St. Paul’s, Congers, since 2011, has been assigned to St. Aedan’s, Pearl River. He previously served at St. Joseph-St. Thomas, Staten Island, and St. Helena’s, the Bronx. He was ordained in 2004.

Father David Rider, who had done further studies at Pontifical North American College in Rome following his ordination in 2014, has been assigned to Our Lady Star of the Sea, Staten Island, where he had served briefly last summer.
