Some 1,400 candidates and catechumens from across the archdiocese are expected to be welcomed into the Catholic Church during the Easter Vigil April 4.

During Lent, they will take major steps on their faith journeys.

The Rite of Election is for catechumens who have participated in their parish catechumenate and are ready to receive the sacraments of Christian initiation at Easter: baptism, confirmation and First Holy Communion.

Cardinal Dolan will preside at the Rite of Election at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the first Sunday in Lent, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. Participating will be 474 catechumens from 97 parishes.

The Call to Continuing Conversion is for already baptized candidates who have also participated in their parish catechumenate and are preparing to complete their initiation in the Church by receiving the sacraments of confirmation and First Holy Communion.

On Sunday, March 1, also at 2 p.m., the Cardinal will preside at the Rite of Calling Candidates to Continuing Conversion. Participating will be 571 candidates representing 53 parishes.

There will also be Rites of Continuing Conversion offered that day at 3 p.m. at the following churches: Our Lady of Pity, Staten Island, with 137 candidates from 15 parishes, Auxiliary Bishop John O’Hara celebrating; Transfiguration Church, Tarrytown, 65 candidates from eight parishes, Auxiliary Bishop Gerald Walsh celebrating; St. Kateri Tekakwitha Church, LaGrangeville, 153 candidates from 21 parishes, Auxiliary Bishop Dominick Lagonegro celebrating.
