In New York and across the United States, countless faithful will prayerfully gather to acknowledge the 15 years that have passed since the terrorist attacks that befell the country on Sept. 11, 2001.

A number of remembrances are planned across the archdiocese.

St. Peter’s Church on Staten Island will host the annual “Eve of Solemn Remembrance” Friday, Sept. 9.

The gathering, sponsored by the University of Notre Dame Club of Staten Island, begins at 7 p.m. with sacred music provided by Maura Molloy. Auxiliary Bishop John J. O’Hara will serve as principal celebrant and homilist of the Mass that follows at 7:30 p.m. Father Michael Cichon, pastor of St. Peter-Assumption-St. Paul parish, and several other priests will concelebrate. Deacons from across Staten Island will also participate. Ms. Molloy will provide additional music during the liturgy.

All Staten Islanders are invited to stop by St. Peter’s Church, 53 St. Marks Place, to participate in the service that offers reflection, prayer and spiritual healing.

The Twin Towers were visible from the church property of St. Peter’s.

Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains will honor all alumni police officers, firefighters and EMTs at the 15th annual Joe Riverso Memorial Game at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9 at Stepinac’s athletic field, 950 Mamaroneck Ave.

The ceremony honors the memory of Joseph R. Riverso, a beloved Stepinac alumnus, athlete and assistant football coach, and White Plains native, who perished in the 9/11 terror attacks on the World Trade Center towers.

Since 2002, the first home game of Stepinac’s varsity Crusaders football team season has been preceded by the ceremony attended by members of the Riverso family, friends, public officials and representatives from organizations throughout the White Plains community.

Because this year’s Joe Riverso Memorial Game coincides with the 15th anniversary of 9/11, the school decided to honor its police, firefighter and EMT alumni as well.

The game between the Stepinac Crusaders and the Cornwall Central Dragons gets under way following the ceremony.

On Saturday, Sept. 10, an Ecumenical Prayer Service, led by the FDNY, will be held from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan. Also at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Division 3 of the FDNY will attend Mass together Sunday, Sept. 11, at 10:15 a.m. The remembrance of 9/11 will also be part of the Prayers of the Faithful at all the other Masses at the cathedral.

St. Peter-Our Lady of the Rosary in Manhattan, adjacent to Ground Zero, has scheduled the following for Sept. 11:

• 10 a.m.: Sept. 11 Memorial Mass at St. Joseph’s Chapel, 385 South End Ave., Battery Park City.

• 11 a.m.: Sept. 11 Memorial Mass at Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 7 State St.

• Noon: Sept. 11 Memorial Mass at St. Peter’s Church, 22 Barclay St., celebrated by Father Jarlath Quinn, pastor of St. Peter-Our Lady of the Rosary-St. Joseph Chapel.

All are invited to attend any of the Masses, which will include special music, reflections and intercessions to mark the anniversary.

Additionally, St. Peter’s is hosting two events in conjunction with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey:

• 2 p.m.: Interfaith Remembrance Service.

• 3 p.m.: Mass for Port Authority families.
