Advent Unity

Posted

Just to let you know that we in the hinterlands above I-84 also recognize Advent as a wonderful moment to celebrate Christian Unity with our other Christian brothers and sisters (CNY, Dec. 24). For the past three years, the Ecumenical Committee of St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church has hosted the service with a homily offered by a Lutheran pastor in our first year and a Presbyterian college chaplain last year.

This year, through the good offices of our pastor, Msgr. James Sullivan, our homilist was Bishop Andrew Dietsche of the Episcopal Diocese of New York, and the presider at the service was our own Auxiliary Bishop Gerald Walsh. It was a wonderful occasion with the theme of the Year of Mercy and a homily on Jesus’ most difficult commandment, forgiveness. We don’t know what we will do next year to top this, but it is a tradition that we hope will continue as a reminder of how much we have in common and how much we need to recognize that.
