CYO Crowns Girls’ and Boys’ Hoops Champions

Aleya Corretjer scored 12 points to lead St. Gregory’s of Garnerville to a 44-34 victory over Our Lady Star of the Sea, Staten Island, in the girls’ varsity division of the CYO Archdiocesan basketball championships at The Ursuline School in New Rochelle March 22.

St. Gregory led 21-14 at halftime. Ashley Lambert had 10 points for Our Star of the Sea.

In the girls’ junior varsity group, St. Ann’s, Ossining, downed St. Margaret’s, Pearl River, 42-33.

In gidgets’ play, St. Gregory, Garnerville, defeated St. Charles, Staten Island, 30-20.

In novice action, Sacred Heart, Staten Island, beat St. Gregory, Garnerville, 21-2. In the debs division, St. Augustine, New City, defeated Holy Name, New Rochelle, 33-26.

In cadettes, Our Lady Star of the Sea, Staten Island, defeated St. Thomas of Canterbury, Cornwall on Hudson, 45-9.

The CYO boys’ championships were played at Mount St. Michael Academy, the Bronx, on the same day.

In boys’ action, Resurrection, Rye, edged St. Gregory, Garnerville, 54-49, on the strength of a 22-point performance from Matthew Cooper to win the varsity crown. John Morina had 20 points to lead St. Gregory. Resurrection led 21-17 at the half.

In other play, St. Joachim’s, Beacon, defeated St. Francis Xavier, the Bronx, 39-28, to win the junior varsity title.

St. Catharine’s, Blauvelt, defeated Sacred Heart, Staten Island, 50-46, in the tyro game.

In the small fry division, St. Clare’s, Staten Island, scored a 41-40 victory over St. Joseph’s, Kingston.

St. Clare, Staten Island, defeated St. Francis of Assisi, West Nyack, 42-10, in the rookie final.

In bantam action, Santa Maria, the Bronx, beat St. Augustine, New City, 42-32.
