Catholic School Leagues Honor Top Basketball Players, Coaches

Jordan Gaitley is continuing a family basketball tradition. The Fordham Prep senior averaged 20.9 points in 24 regular-season games, earning CHSAA A Division most valuable player in a vote of league coaches from Catholic high schools in New York City and Westchester County.

Jordan is the son of Stephanie Gaitley, head women’s basketball coach at Fordham University. His older brothers, DC and Dutch, played NCAA Division I college basketball, and Dutch is now the video coordinator for the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs.

Msgr. McClancy’s Anthony Olszewski was named coach of the year for guiding the Crusaders to a league title and a 20-4 regular-season record.

CHSAA A Division All League: Patrick Mahoney, Fordham Prep, the Bronx; William Santiago, Cardinal Spellman, the Bronx; Malik Fisher, Xavier, Manhattan; AJ Morales and Jaz Burton, John F. Kennedy Catholic, Somers; Jordan Williams and Belmin Purisic, St. Edmund, Brooklyn; Alonzo Ortiz-Taylor, Jonathan Ruiz and Wesley Kra, Msgr. McClancy, Queens; Michael Pollard and Jaylin Grey, Nazareth, Brooklyn.

In CHSAA Division AA, Bishop Loughlin senior Keith Williams won most valuable player honors and Mount St. Michael coach Tom Fraher earned coach of the year recognition for their league. Williams signed to play at the University of Cincinnati next season, and Fraher, now in his 26th season, led the Mountaineers to the best overall record in the league at 18-8.

CHSAA AA Division All League: First team – Isaiah Washington, St. Raymond, the Bronx; Elijah Buchanan, Mount St. Michael Academy, the Bronx; Moses Brown and Cole Anthony, Archbishop Molloy, Queens; Jose Alvarado, Christ the King, Queens; Markquis Nowell, Bishop Loughlin, Brooklyn. Second team – Tyrese Williams and Joe Toussaint, Cardinal Hayes, the Bronx; Bryce Willis, Iona Prep, New Rochelle; Alan Griffin, Archbishop Stepinac, White Plains; Zack Bruno, Xaverian, Brooklyn; Kieffer Punter, All Hallows, the Bronx. Third team – Josh Alexander, Iona Prep; Jorden Means, Archbishop Stepinac; Saquan Singleton, Msgr. Scanlan, the Bronx; Omar Silverio, St. Raymond; Kofi Cockburn and Tyson Walker, Christ the King, Queens.

In CHSAA B Division, La Salle Academy junior James Bouknight and Sacred Heart coach Stephen Marcellino were named most valuable player and coach of the year, respectively. Bouknight averaged a league-high 17.2 points per game in leading La Salle to a 22-2 regular-season record. Marcellino guided Sacred Heart to a 20-4 regular-season mark.

CHSAA B All League: Sean Smith and Dylan Wusu, Sacred Heart, Yonkers; Brendan Cama and Jorge Perdomo, Salesian, New Rochelle; Isaiah Allen-Smith, Bryce Council and Korey Williams, La Salle, Manhattan; Conor Nicholson and Paul Castaybert, Regis, Manhattan; and Kyle Holston, St. John’s Prep, Queens.

In CHSAA Staten Island Division, St. Joseph by-the-Sea junior Devin Nicholson was selected most valuable player after averaging 23.3 points per regular-season game, and St. Peter’s Charlie Driscoll received coach of the year honors for leading his team to the Staten Island division title.

CHSAA Staten Island Division All League: Liam Sanborn and Kaleb Hicks, St. Peter’s; Eric Klayman and Branden Abrams, Msgr. Farrell; Luis Tapia, Moore Catholic; Michael Matrangolo, St. Joseph by-the-Sea.
