Column’s ‘Truth’

Posted

To the Editor:

Thank you so much for your article on Spain and the Monarchy by George Weigel in the July 24 issue. At last someone writes the truth about the Spanish Civil War.

Thanks to Franco, Spain was saved from the clutches of Moscow’s communist state. I was born in Madrid, and as a child, I remember my mother’s horror when priests’ bodies were dragged down the street past my father’s store, by the “republicans” carrying flags with the hammer and sickle, who also burned down Catholic churches.

In our daily conversation, we couldn’t say “adios” (goodbye), but were forced to say “salud” (health) instead. My father’s store was eventually bombed out.

My family and I have always supported democracy and the monarchy, which was renewed to assure the peace and future of Spain, and embraces people of all religions.
