Father Alban Montella, O.F.M., who was former provincial of the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate Conception Province, with headquarters in Manhattan, died Dec. 28 at Padua Friary on Thompson Street, a retirement house of the community. He was 87.

He was provincial minister from 1979 until 1989 and was provincial vicar, 1973-1979.

He earlier served as parochial vicar at St. Anthony of Padua parish on Sullivan Street in Lower Manhattan.

He served in formation centers in Troy and in Andover, Mass., and taught and was principal in Boston, Mass.

Born in Providence, R.I., he entered the Order of Friars Minor in 1947 and professed final vows in 1951. He was ordained in 1955.

He is survived by his brother, Salvatore, and two sisters, Dorothy Vita and Lucy Prosser.

A Funeral Mass was offered Dec. 30 at St. Anthony of Padua Church. Burial followed at the Friars’ Cemetery in Wappingers Falls.
