Father Anthony V. Brennan, M.M.

Father Anthony V. Brennan, M.M., a missioner to Hong Kong, died May 19 in Vancouver, British Columbia. He was 80.

From 1990 to 1994, Father Brennan served in the development department of the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers in Ossining and ministered to parishioners at Transfiguration parish in Lower Manhattan.

In 1961, Father Brennan was assigned to Hong Kong to study Cantonese. He later became pastor of three parishes there.

He remained in Hong Kong for most of his missionary service, which included an appointment as second regional assistant and director of the Maryknoll House in Stanley. Also in Hong Kong, he worked with the Marriage Advisory Council and visited patients at a hospital.

He retired in 2001 and returned to Hong Kong where he continued pastoral work.

Born in Brooklyn, he attended Ascension Grammar School in Manhattan and graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx. He entered Maryknoll in 1952 and professed final vows in 1960. He was ordained in 1961.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Maryknoll College and a master’s degree in religious education from Maryknoll Major Seminary.

Father Brennan is survived by two sisters, Mary Del Duca and Ann Pirozzi, and three brothers, Charles, Peter and Francis.

A Funeral Mass was offered June 3 in Queen of Apostles Chapel. Burial was in the Maryknoll Society Cemetery in Ossining.
