Fine Tribute

Posted

To the Editor:

Congratulations and sincere thanks to Catholic New York for the magnificent and majestic tribute to His Eminence, Cardinal Edward Egan, Archbishop Emeritus of New York, on his life and service to God and the people of God (CNY, March 12).

Cardinal Egan was my spiritual director and he brought me to a closer relationship with Jesus Christ through his direction and spiritual books.

Cardinal Egan was a wise and wonderful shepherd. The greatest gift that His Eminence gave me, and one I will cherish always—was when he chose me as one of the Catholic persons to receive the Body of Christ from Pope Benedict XVI during the Holy Father’s visit to America in 2008. Just before Pope Benedict placed the Body of Christ on my tongue, I smiled and said, “We love you, Holy Father.” He smiled.

Thank you, Cardinal Egan, and may your soul and the souls of all the former shepherds of the Archdiocese of New York rest in the peace of Jesus Christ.
