Catholic Charities of the archdiocese hosted the annual St. Nicholas Project Shopping Day at Kmart Astor Place in Manhattan on Dec. 10.
Out of care and concern for the most vulnerable families in the area, about 600 volunteers shopped and bagged items of basic necessity, including clothing and bedding. Each volunteer received a profile of a family and a budget, and had the option to shop for multiple families. All items were purchased with previously donated funds. Volunteers shopped for 1,330 families, equivalent to 5,320 individuals, additionally servicing 40 affiliates and programs of Catholic Charities.
Cardinal Dolan shopped for a family whose members are African refugees from the country of Eritrea. Through his generosity, he brought special attention to the issue of New York’s immigrants and refugees helped by Catholic Charities.
Msgr. Kevin Sullivan, executive director of Catholic Charities, was also in attendance.
The St. Nicholas Project is a program that provides critical social services to families in need throughout the year. In addition to providing gifts for families that otherwise could not afford a Christmas gift exchange, St. Nicholas Project services include nutritious meals, job readiness training, housing assistance, and immigration and refugee resettlement counseling.
