In Step for Steuben Day

The 59th German-American Steuben Parade stepped off in Manhattan on Sept. 17 as marchers made their way up Fifth Avenue from 68th Street to 86th Street. Approximately 50 groups from Germany, Austria and Switzerland—as well as German groups from other countries—traditionally march in the annual German-American Steuben Parade. Also among the participants were festive music and dance groups, and floats showcasing more than three centuries of German-American friendship.

The 2016 grand marshals were Ambassador Peter Wittig, German ambassador to the United States, and retired German figure skater Katarina Witt, who won Olympic gold medals for East Germany in 1984 and 1988. A Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral preceded the noon parade, and an Oktoberfest in Central Park followed.
