Dr. Jeronimo Dominguez, a retired physician who spent more than 40 years evangelizing his fellow Hispanics, died May 27. He was 72.
From the time he arrived in the United States in 1961 from his native Spain, he was a well-known figure in the Hispanic Catholic community and a tireless pro-life activist.
A Bronx resident, he had leadership roles in the Cursillo movement, serving twice as president of the secretariat for the Spanish-speaking Cursillo movement and for many years working every weekend on retreats or Marriage Encounters at the Cursillo Center in the Bronx. He also was an important liaison between the Cursillo and Charismatic movements in the archdiocese, and a supporter of the Legion of Mary.
He had a weekly radio program on religion that was broadcast to more than 400 stations nationwide and internationally, and a weekly television program, “La Biblia Vivida,” which aired in Manhattan. He wrote at least 80 books and pamphlets on Catholicism.
By his estimate, he counseled and persuaded hundreds of pregnant women not to get abortions. He ran for mayor of New York City as a Right to Life candidate in 1981, and ran for Bronx borough president in 1980, with campaigns that focused on abortion.
In his busy private practice of internal medicine in Washington Heights, Dr. Dominguez charged his patients only what they could afford.
He was born in Pinilla del Toro, Zamora, Spain, and received his medical degree summa cum laude from the University of Salamanca.
Last November, he was one of 10 people honored by the archdiocesan Hispanic Affairs Office at its bicentennial convocation. He also was a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre.
Surviving is a son, Frank. He was predeceased by his wife, Gladys, and a son, Jerome, an emergency services officer with the New York City Police Department killed at the World Trade Center on 9/11.
Auxiliary Bishop Josu Iriondo, vicar for Hispanic Affairs and director of the Hispanic Catholic Charismatic Center, offered a Funeral Mass May 30 at St. Anthony of Padua Church in the Bronx. Burial was in St. Raymond’s Cemetery in the Bronx.
