Not a Good Fit

Posted

To the Editor:

I have a small concern about a cartoon I saw on Page 12 of the current issue (CNY, Oct. 30).

I understand the humor that was attempted, however, I feel like during these times, with all the police haters out there, this comic is in very poor taste, especially coming from Catholic New York.  A stereotype is a stereotype, and portraying that in attempted humor seems inappropriate to me.

I am the wife of a police officer and I just wanted you to know my feelings on this. The saying on the comic is “nothing but donuts,” written in very fine print. The comic doesn’t portray what the Catholic Church preaches, love and acceptance of all.  As a practicing Catholic, I don’t see it as fitting in the paper.

There are stereotypes about other professions, nationalities and even religions. The Catholic Church should not be depicting any of these stereotypes within cartoons.  It’s just not right. I believe police officers have a lot more to offer than “nothing but donuts.”
