Prominent Place for Dominican Sisters at School Centennial
Cardinal Dolan pauses with a replica sign after presiding at the renaming of the street outside St. John Chrysostom Church in the Bronx Nov. 1. The occasion delighted the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill, including the parish school principal, Sister Mary Elizabeth Mooney, O.P., to the cardinal’s immediate left.
Sister Rose Andrew, O.P., a Dominican Sister of Blauvelt and Sister Ann Veronica, R.S.M., an alumna of the school, happily watch the festivities in the rain.
The sign at the corner of East 167th Street and Hoe Avenue now reads “Dominican Sisters of Sparkill Place” in honor of the school’s foundresses. The school is celebrating 100 years of service to a multi-ethnic population.
Sister Maureen Daly, O.P., a teacher, with students Amelia Quezada, Michelle Diaz, Janna Perez and Massiel Javier. The school is located at 1144 Hoe Ave. Father Eric Cruz is pastor of the parish.
