Restored Stations of the Cross at Our Saviour Church in Manhattan were blessed at a Mass March 13 by Auxiliary Bishop John O’Hara, episcopal vicar of South, East and West Manhattan, and Staten Island.
The Stations were painted by 19th-century Italian artist Constantino Brumidi, who also painted frescoes at the Vatican and on walls, ceilings and the interior dome of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. An immigrant to the United States, Brumidi is said to have arrived in New York in 1852 and was later granted citizenship.
The Stations at Our Saviour, and their restored and regilded frames, came from St. Stephen’s, one of the parishes merged into Our Saviour, St. Stephen and Our Lady of the Scapular, and the Chapel of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, in conjunction with the archdiocesan pastoral planning initiative Making All Things New.
