Retirements, Senior Appointments Announced for Priests

Nineteen priests of the archdiocese have retired or been appointed as senior priests or administrators, the Archbishop's Office has announced. The assignments were effective July 1.

The priests who retired are Father Emil L. Bettley, parochial vicar at St. Ann's, Nyack; Father John C. Flynn, administrator of St. Martin of Tours, the Bronx; Msgr. John A. Gallagher, administrator of St. Paul's, Yonkers; Msgr. Francis P. Gorman, administrator of St. Teresa's, Sleepy Hollow; Msgr. Donald W. Hendricks, administrator of St. Christopher's, Buchanan; Msgr. Joachim J. Olendzki, senior priest at St. Sylvia's, Tivoli; Father James J. Quinn, who was on leave of absence; Father Richard Seagraves, senior priest at St. Patrick's Cathedral; Father William M. Shelley, in residence at Our Lady of Good Counsel, Manhattan; Msgr. John B. Sullivan, administrator of St. Columba's, Manhattan; and Msgr. Joseph J. Zammit, in residence, St. Joseph's Chapel, Manhattan.

Those appointed or continuing as senior priests or administrators are Msgr. Joachim B. Beaumont, senior priest at St. Brendan's, the Bronx; Msgr. Thomas J. Bergin, administrator of St. Charles, Staten Island; Msgr. Thomas B. Fenlon, administrator of St. Augustine's, the Bronx; Father Joseph F. Irwin, administrator of Most Holy Trinity, Mamaroneck; Father William F. Martin, senior priest with the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging; Msgr. Hugh F. McManus, administrator of Our Lady of Fatima, Scarsdale; Msgr. John F.X. Smith, administrator of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Tuxedo; and Msgr. William J. Toohy, in residence at Blessed Sacrament, Manhattan.

Msgr. Joachim B. Beaumont was pastor of Sacred Heart of Jesus and administrator of St. Benedict the Moor in Manhattan, 2003-2009. Since then he has been parochial vicar at St. Brendan's, the Bronx. He served as pastor of four other parishes in Manhattan: St. Emeric's, 1998-2003; St. Elizabeth's, 1986-1998; St. Brigid's, 1980-1986; and St. Paul's, where he was co-pastor, 1976-1980. He was vicar of North Manhattan, 1989-1998, and vicar of South Manhattan, 1982-1986. He was director of the Spanish-speaking Apostolate, 1973-1976. As a parochial vicar he served in Manhattan at Our Lady of Lourdes, 1966-1973, and St. Agnes, 1964-1965, and on Staten Island at St. Mary of the Assumption, 1965-1966, and St. Michael and St. Clement, 1965. Born in Pamplona, Spain, he was ordained in Spain in 1959 and taught in Venezuela for five years. He was incardinated into the archdiocese in 1974 and was named a monsignor in 1983.

Msgr. Thomas J. Bergin had been pastor of St. Charles on Staten Island since 2004 and was administrator of St. Raymond's, the Bronx, 2002-2004. He was vicar for education, 1992-2002, and served concurrently as president of Cathedral High School, 1995-2002, and chancellor of the archdiocese, 1993-1994. He was principal of Msgr. Farrell High School, 1983-1992, and Moore Catholic High School, 1973-1982, both on Staten Island. He taught at Farrell, 1965-1973. He was pastor of St. Mary's in Poughkeepsie, 1982-1983, and parochial vicar at St. Charles, Staten Island, 1961-1965. He was ordained in 1961 and named a monsignor in 1990.






Father Emil L. Bettley had been parochial vicar at St. Ann's in Nyack since 1999 and was a faculty member at Cardinal Spellman High School, the Bronx, 1997-1999. He was a parochial vicar at Our Lady of Victory, Manhattan, 1994-1997, and in the Bronx at Our Lady of Solace, 1990-1994, and St. Philip Neri, 1983-1990. He was ordained in 1983.

Msgr. Thomas B. Fenlon had been pastor of St. Augustine's in the Bronx since 2002. He was pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes in Manhattan, 1988-2000, and parochial vicar of St. Lucy's, the Bronx, 2000-2002. From 1978 to 1988 he was coordinator of Hispanic ministry in the Newburgh-Beacon area. He was parochial vicar at St. Mary's, Newburgh, 1972-1978; St. Charles, Staten Island, 1968-1972; Annunciation, Manhattan, 1964-1968; and St. John the Evangelist, Beacon, 1961-1964. He was ordained in 1961 and named a monsignor in 2006.







Father John C. Flynn served as pastor of St. Martin of Tours, the Bronx, from 1989 to 2008, and had been administrator of the parish since then. He was pastor of St. Francis of Assisi, the Bronx, 1975-1988, and parochial vicar at three other Bronx parishes: St. Thomas Aquinas, 1988-1989, St. John Chrysostom, 1975, and St. Raymond's, 1958-1972. He also was parochial vicar at The Magdalene in Pocantico Hills, 1955-1958; Immaculate Conception, Amenia, 1955; and at a parish in Caracas, Venezuela, 1972-1975. He was ordained in 1955.







Msgr. John A. Gallagher had served at St. Paul the Apostle in Yonkers since 1962, when he was assigned to the parish as parochial vicar. He became pastor in 1985 and was made administrator in 2009. He also was parochial vicar at St. Emeric's in Manahattan, 1959-1962; St. John the Evangelist, Goshen, 1956-1959; and St. Mary of the Snow, Saugerties, 1955-1956. He was ordained in 1955 and was named a monsignor in 1995.







Msgr. Francis P. Gorman had served since 1990 as pastor of St. Teresa of Avila in Sleepy Hollow, and became administrator in 2009. He also was pastor of Holy Cross in Sleepy Hollow from 1990 until 2007, when the parish closed. He was pastor of St. Columba's in Chester, 1977-1990. From 1973 to 1977 he was vice chancellor for Spanish pastoral affairs and acting director of the Spanish Apostolate. He served in Macarao, Venezuela, 1969-1972, at a parish sponsored by the archdiocese that he helped to establish. He was a parochial vicar at St. Teresa's, North Tarrytown, 1972-1973, and St. Rose of Lima in Manhattan, 1959-1962. He was ordained in 1959 named a monsignor in 2006.







Msgr. Donald W. Hendricks had been pastor of St. Christopher's in Buchanan from 1993 to 2009 and served there as administrator since last year. He served at St. Anthony's, Nepera Park, Yonkers, as parochial vicar, 1977-1981, and pastor, 1981-1993. He taught at Cathedral College of Immaculate Conception Seminary in Douglaston, 1968-1977; at Cathedral College in Manhattan, 1963-1968; Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx, 1957-1961. He was parochial vicar at St. Athanasius, Harriman, 1963; St. Eugene's, Yonkers, 1957; Good Shepherd, Rhinebeck, 1955-1957; and St. Mary's, Newburgh, 1955. He was ordained in 1955 and named a monsignor in 1995.

Father Joseph F. Irwin had been pastor of Most Holy Trinity in Mamaroneck since 1989. Previously he served at St. Mary's in Mount Vernon, where he was named parochial vicar in 1966, temporary administrator in 1977 and pastor later that year. He was parochial vicar at St. Peter's, Rosendale, 1962-1966, and St. John the Evangelist in Clove for the summer following his ordination in 1962.

Msgr. Hugh F. McManus had been pastor of Our Lady of Fatima in Scarsdale since 1994; he served there as administrator, 1993-1994, and parochial vicar, 1980-1984. He was pastor of Sacred Heart, Dobbs Ferry, 1984-1989, after serving there briefly as administrator. From 1989 to 1992 he was archdiocesan vicar for education. He was a faculty member at Cathedral College of the Immaculate Conception in Douglaston, 1968-1980, and taught English at St. Joseph's Seminary, Dunwoodie, 1964-1966. He was a parochial vicar at Our Lady Star of the Sea, Staten Island, 1966-1968. He was ordained in 1961 and was named a monsignor in 1990.

Father William F. Martin was a chaplain in the U.S. Air Force, 1982-1996, serving in the United States and Korea. In 1996 he joined the staff of the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging, a Catholic lay organization in Kansas City, Kan., that sponsors children and elderly persons in developing countries worldwide. Earlier he served at St. Mary of the Assumption parish in Katonah, 1963-1966, and was a faculty member at Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains, beginning in 1966. He was ordained in 1963.







Msgr. Joachim J. Olendzki was pastor of St. Stanislaus, Pine Island, from 1989 until 2008. He then was a senior priest at St. Sylvia's in Tivoli, assisting at St. Christopher's in Red Hook. He was director of Our Lady of Fatima Portuguese Roman Catholic Center in Yonkers, 1977-1979, and served as parochial vicar at Our Lady Star of the Sea, Staten Island, 1979-1989; Our Lady of Victory, Mount Vernon, 1973-1977; St. Frances de Chantal, the Bronx, 1961-1973; and Assumption, Staten Island, 1960-1961. Born in Brazil, he studied for the priesthood there and in Rome, and was ordained in Rome in 1958. He was incardinated into the archdiocese in 1974 and was named a monsignor in 2006.

Msgr. James J. Quinn was appointed parochial vicar at St. Malachy's, The Actors' Chapel, in Manhattan in 1977 and served until 1980. He has been on a leave of absence since then. He was chaplain at Elizabeth Seton College in Yonkers, 1972-1977. He was a parochial vicar at St. Mary's, the Bronx, 1966-1968; Our Lady Star of the Sea, Staten Island, 1965-1966; and St. Peter's, Poughkeepsie, 1960-1965. He was ordained in 1960 and was made a monsignor in 1968.







Father Richard Seagraves had been a parochial vicar at St. Patrick's Cathedral since 2004 and senior priest there since 2009. He was a parochial vicar at Immaculate Heart of Mary, Scarsdale, 1999-2004; St. Eugene's, Yonkers, 1997-1999; Sacred Heart, Hartsdale, 1994-1997; and Notre Dame, Manhattan, 1993-1994. Born in Georgia, he served in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam and taught at several colleges and universities. He entered the Cistercian Order in Switzerland in 1983 and was ordained in Austria in 1991. He was incardinated into the archdiocese in 1997.






Father William M. Shelley, in residence at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Manhattan, was parochial vicar at St. Agnes, Manhattan, 1973-1978 and from 1979 until his retirement in 2000. He remained active at the parish and also was a senior priest at St. Patrick's Cathedral. He was pastor of St. Thomas the Apostle parish in Harlem, 1978-1979. He served as parochial vicar at St. Malachy's, The Actors' Chapel, 1959-1973; Our Lady Star of the Sea, Staten Island, 1957-1959; St. Martin of Tours, the Bronx, 1952-1957; and Good Shepherd, Rhinebeck, 1950-1952. He also was a coordinator of the Courage program, for Catholics with same-sex attractions, in Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island. He was ordained in 1950.







Msgr. John B. Sullivan had been administrator of St. Columba's in Manhattan since 2008 and was administrator of St. Joseph's in Manhattan, 2007-2008. He served as pastor of St. Mary's in the Bronx from 1987 to 2007, and was pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes, Manhattan, 1981-1987. He was administrator of Ascension in Manhattan, 1977-1981, and parochial vicar at St. John the Evangelist in Beacon, 1970-1977, and Visitation in the Bronx, 1961-1970. He was ordained in 1961 and was named a monsignor in 2006.

Msgr. William J. Toohy has been senior priest at Blessed Sacrament parish in Manhattan since 2005, and previously served the parish as parochial vicar, 2001-2005 and 1961-1969. He also served for 32 years at archdiocesan Catholic Charities, where he was appointed in 1969 as director of social research. He was associate executive director of Catholic Charities from 1987 to 2001, and also was director of the archdiocesan Office of Legal Affairs. In 1990 he served for six months as acting president and chief executive officer of Covenant House. He was ordained in 1961 and was named a monsignor in 1986.







Msgr. Joseph J. Zammit was a chaplain with the New York City Police Department, 1987-2006, and has served with the department as a senior priest since then. He also has been a senior priest at St. Joseph's Chapel in Manhattan since 2009. He was a parochial vicar at St. Stephen's, Manhattan, 1987-2006; St. Joseph's, Bronxville, 1986-1987; and Sacred Heart, Suffern, 1961-1970. He served at the Bronx Municipal Hospital as assistant chaplain, 1970-1986, and associate chaplain, 1956-1961. He was ordained in 1956 and was named a monsignor in 1990.
