Students in the Astronomy Club at The Montfort Academy in Mount Vernon got off to an early start on Oct. 8, with a group of 60 students viewing the lunar eclipse along the Hudson River at exactly 5 a.m. Two weeks later, students visited the Planetarium at the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers for the second class in a three-part series on the beauty of the planets. The students participated in an interactive show of the night sky in the state-of-the-art Planetarium.

Students at Mount St. Michael Academy in the Bronx are collecting food items to provide Thanksgiving dinner baskets for members of St. Nicholas of Tolentine parish in the South Bronx.

The school’s campus ministry department and student council are sponsoring the endeavor.

Every student in each homeroom brings in a canned food item while the school’s sports teams host fund-raising events to cover the cost of turkeys.

The aim is to raise enough money and collect enough food to fill up 60 baskets.

Students at Most Precious Blood School in Walden know just what to do in case of a fire thanks to alumna Laura Tighe, class of 2003. She visited the school during Fire Prevention Week along with members of the Walden Fire District where she is a volunteer.

During the presentation, volunteer firefighters showed students how their fire trucks work and gave them lessons on the fire-fighting equipment they use.

They told students about the importance of having an escape plan and knowing what to do in case of fire. Ms. Tighe encouraged students to give back to the community by volunteering for organizations like the local fire department.
