Father Joseph Triano, S.S.P., a Mount Vernon native who served on Staten Island in the 1960s, died Sept. 9 at Angela Hospice in Livonia, Mich. He was 79. Father Triano served at the Society of St. Paul's Staten Island community from 1961 to 1969. He was formation director, coordinator of Alba House Books and, in his last two years there, as local superior, he oversaw an expansion of the community on Staten Island including construction of its publishing center on Victory Boulevard. He was named director of the United States Province of the society, based in Derby, N.Y., in 1969 and served until 1980. He then transferred to the Dearborn, Mich., community, where he was local superior. Born in Mount Vernon, he was the 10th of 11 children in his family. He entered the Society of St. Paul in 1949 and was ordained a priest of the order in 1959. He studied pastoral theology in Rome for one year after ordination, then returned to New York where he earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Fordham University. He is survived by a sister, Yolanda Luzzi, and two brothers, Michael and Frank. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Sept. 13 in the Society of St. Paul Chapel in Ellsworth, Ohio, with burial in the Provincial Cemetery in Canfield, Ohio.
