Baaba Abaka-Yankson, a senior at St. Raymond Academy for Girls in the Bronx, is one of 10 high school students to be recognized in The New York Times College Scholarship Program this year.

Born in Ghana, Baaba moved to Riverdale with her family when she was 15. As a Times scholar, she will receive a laptop and a four-year scholarship worth a maximum $7,500 annually. She will also receive mentoring and networking opportunities and work as a summer intern at the Times.

Baaba told CNY, "I am incredibly honored and humbled to have been selected as a New York Times Scholar.”

She added that the people from the St. Raymond’s community and her family have been her strength. “The road that has led me here has not been straight but through the storms, these people have inspired me to chase success,” she said. “This scholarship is nothing short of a blessing and I will use it to propel me to my highest potential and to my dreams."

Baaba, who is planning to study science and biology, has not made her final college selection yet.
