A Boy Scout who attends Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains took the Scout oath “to help other people at all times” very seriously.

Jack Dailey of Troop 240 in Riverdale was honored at a ceremony at the Ernst and Young Building in Manhattan Oct. 16 for saving his neighbors from a January fire. He was honored with the Honor Medal and Crossed Palms Award from the New York City Scouts and the National Court of Honor.

He has been promoted to the rank of Eagle Scout for his actions, the highest rank in Boy Scouting.

Jack’s heroic act came during what started out as an ordinary winter’s day. “I was sitting in my hallway outside my apartment door waiting for my mom to come home because I was locked out and noticed the fire,” he said.

He said he knew he needed to react quickly. “It was all a blur. I knew I had to get all to a safe area and get everyone out safely,” he said.

That January 30 day, Jack saved his neighbor Marion Lawrence, 74, and her grandson, toddler Jake Garrett. He led them to the seventh-floor fire escape and dialed 911. The fire department arrived and gutted the apartment, putting out the blaze.

As for Jack, he’s thinking of continuing in a career of helping people. “I am thinking of being a cop one day,” he told CNY.
