An Additional Step

It is a good thing to see the steps our archdiocese has taken to address the Church’s sex abuse crisis in CNY’s April 11 issue. However, it is starting to read like a scorecard with this much money spent, these many victims reached and how many people trained.

It is time for the hierarchy and the clergy to do more on a personal level. A year of public penance by both groups should be declared. I do not know what the form and the substance of the penance should be, but the penance must unequivocally state that the hierarchy and the clergy accept total responsibility for this crisis and beg forgiveness from the victims and from God.
