The Friends of the Missionaries of the Poor held a two-hour benefit concert before 800 people at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church on Staten Island March 3. Money raised through ticket and merchandise sales went toward the Catholic religious institute’s mission of working with the poor in the island of Jamaica. The concert featured songs adapted from Psalms and the Old Testament. The performers from Kingston, Jamaica, had a second benefit concert the next day at Our Lady of Pity on Staten Island. “They gave a very lovely concert for their mission. The music was really good and powerful,” said Father Basil Akut, parochial vicar at Our Lady Star of the Sea. The two Staten Island parishes have sent volunteers to Jamaica to work with the Missionaries of the Poor for several years.
