Brother James Austin Finnegan, C.F.C

Brother James Austin Finnegan, C.F.C, who taught at Iona Preparatory School in New Rochelle for 11 years, died June 27 at Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville. He was 74.

Brother Finnegan was at Iona Prep, 1973-1984.

He was associate superintendent of schools in the Archdiocese of Newark, 1987-2000, and also served in Schenectady, Massachusetts and Florida.

He was a Knight Commander of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.

Born in Buffalo, he entered the Congregation of Christian Brothers in 1962 and professed final vows in 1969.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in classical languages from Iona College and a master’s in student personnel services from Montclair State University in New Jersey.

His sister, Nancy McCabe, survives him.

A Funeral Mass was offered July 2 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Scarsdale. Burial was in Christian Brothers Cemetery, West Park.
