Classroom Memories

Posted

Reading the obituary of Sister Helen Francis Curnan, O.P., in your April 13 issue brought me back to my kindergarten or first grade classroom at St. Helena’s School in the Bronx, about 1952, and one of my earliest memories: Sister Helen Francis playfully kidding around with another teacher, Sister Jean Clare. She must have been about 23, but she was an authority figure nevertheless...and one fondly remembered all these years later.

It is sad to see these devoted women passing away. Beyond the subjects they taught, the example of their joy and their faith still resonates with me as I am sure it does with hundreds (thousands?) of others whose lives they touched. God bless her, and them.
