The gift of family is the topic of an upcoming conference at St. Joseph’s Seminary in Dunwoodie. “Education, Progress and Love: New Paths Forward,” will consider what it means to live the Catholic vision of family life in an ever-changing world, and celebrates the 50th anniversary of Pope St. Paul VI’s teaching in the encyclical “Humanae Vitae” (“Of Human Life”).
The daylong gathering on Saturday, Dec. 1, begins at 9:30 a.m. and concludes after a 4:15 p.m. Mass celebrated by Auxiliary Bishop Peter Byrne.
Cardinal Dolan, in a Flocknote post earlier this month, has invited the faithful of the archdiocese to attend.
“Education is essential so that we understand the Church is offering us a positive vision, not just rules to follow,” the cardinal said. “Progress in science and technology is helping both men and women enjoy healthier lives. Love, the foundation of all we do as Christians, must remain our guiding virtue so that our families thrive.”
Speakers include Father Paul Check, rector of St. John Fisher Seminary, Stamford, Conn., Diocese of Bridgeport; Dr. Marguerite Duane, executive director, Fertility Appreciation Collaborative to Teach the Science (FACTS); Anna Halpine, founder and CEO, World Youth Alliance and CEO of FEMM (Fertility Education and Medical Management); and Dr. Martin Owen, founder and CEO, Vitae Medical Solutions.
“As we enter into the time of year when our minds turn to gratitude and our calendars fill with holiday celebrations, one thing that becomes clear is the importance of family,” Cardinal Dolan said. “Our families play a key role in forming us, and they are there to help and support us in times of joy or sorrow. Let’s not forget to thank God for our families and tell them how much we love them in the coming weeks.”
