CYO Awards for Artists, Essay Writers

Aspiring artists and essay writers were honored for their work at the annual archdiocesan Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) Art and Essay Awards ceremony. The presentation of awards, including a pizza party for the youths and their families, was held May 19 at the New York Catholic Center in Manhattan.

Taylor Price of John A. Coleman Catholic High School, Hurley, took first place in the art Elite Division. Zyan Nova of Mount St. Michael Academy, the Bronx, placed second, and Cindy Ma of St. John Villa Academy, Staten Island, received third place in the category for high school juniors and seniors.

In the Expert Division for freshmen and sophomores, John F. Kennedy Catholic High School in Somers had a first-place tie between Emma Moran and Gracie Ossorio. Pedro Quezada of Cardinal Hayes High School, the Bronx, took second place, and Jax Mautone of John A. Coleman came in third.

In the Master Division, for seventh- and eighth-graders, Thomas Dziubela of St. Patrick School, Staten Island, captured first place; Casey Chang-Alloy of St. Anthony’s, Nanuet, came in second, and Bernadette Dingman of Holy Trinity, Poughkeepsie, took third place.

Abigail Glover of St. Mary’s School, Wappingers Falls, won first place in the Learner Division for fifth- and sixth-graders. Margaret Wong of Holy Rosary, Staten Island, took second place, and Sulxana Bosquet of St. Paul School, Valley Cottage, was third.

In the Beginner Division, for third- and fourth-graders, Arianna S. Chin of St. Augustine’s School, Ossining, came in first place; Anju Leilan Herard of St. Paul’s School, Valley Cottage, was second and Issabella Zelinsky of St. Joseph’s School, Kingston, was third.

For the Small Fry Division, kindergarten through second grades, Penelope Alemar of Incarnation School, Manhattan, won first place; Elizabeth Portillo of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Elmsford, was second, and Hannah Tang of St. Augustine’s, Ossining, took third.

The Essay Contest winner was Diego Vasquez of St. Mary, Mother of the Church, Fishkill. Liam Gilmartin, also of St. Mary’s, Fishkill, placed second, and Daniel Corbett of Sacred Heart School, Staten Island, was third.
