Dave Anderson, a Pulitzer Prize-winning sportswriter and columnist for the New York Times, died Oct. 4 in Cresskill, N.J. He was 89.

Anderson wrote for the New York Times, 1966-2007, and continued as a Times contributor in retirement, most recently covering the U.S. Open tennis championships in 2017.

Anderson won a Pulitzer Prize for commentary in 1981, and also was the recipient of Associated Press Sports Editors’ Red Smith Award for major contributions to sports journalism in 1994. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2006 and won the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Dick McCann Memorial Award for career excellence in football coverage in 1998.

The author of 21 books, Anderson covered the Brooklyn Dodgers for the Brooklyn Eagle and also wrote for the New York Journal-American.

Born in Troy, Anderson graduated from Xavier High School, Manhattan, and College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Mass.

His sons, Stephen and Mark, and daughters, Jo and Jean-Marie, survive him as well as three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

His wife, Maureen, predeceased him.
