Deacon Dhoel Canals

Deacon Dhoel Canals, who served at Holy Family, Blessed Sacrament and St. John Vianney parish in the Bronx for 29 years, died May 26 at his Bronx residence. He was 81.

Deacon Canals was at Holy Family, Blessed Sacrament and St. John Vianney, 1989-2018, and served at St. John Chrysostom, the Bronx, 1977-1989. His ministries included tending to the liturgical and spiritual needs of the parish and coordinating the lectors, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion and altar servers.

Born in Manhattan, Deacon Canals was a photographer who graduated from James Monroe High School, the Bronx, and attended the Germain School of Photography, Manhattan. He was ordained by Cardinal Terence Cooke in 1977.

His wife, Edith, and son, Dhoel Mark, survive him.

A Funeral Mass was offered May 31 at Holy Family Church, the Bronx. Burial was in St. Raymond Cemetery, the Bronx.
