Dominican Fathers Named Pastors in Manhattan, Pleasantville

Two Dominican Fathers of the Province of St. Joseph have been appointed pastors of parishes in the archdiocese, and archdiocesan priests have been named as temporary administrator of a parish on Staten Island and as parochial vicars in Warwick and Manhattan, the Cardinal’s Office has announced.

Father Hugh Burns, O.P., was named pastor of Holy Innocents, Pleasantville, effective Dec. 1, and Father James Cuddy, O.P., was appointed pastor of St. Joseph’s, Greenwich Village, effective Jan. 1.

Father Abraham Berko has been appointed temporary administrator of St. Adalbert’s, Staten Island, effective Dec. 11. The newly appointed parochial vicars are Father Lorenzo Laboy, St. Stephen’s, Warwick, and Father Ransford Clarke, St. Elizabeth’s, Washington Heights, both effective Dec. 1.

Pastor

Father Hugh Burns, O.P., previously had served for many years in an itinerant preaching ministry while residing at Holy Innocents. In the 1980s he was a formation director for the Dominican Fathers in Puerto Rico and served in Hispanic ministry in the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C.  He was ordained for the Dominican Fathers, Province of St. Joseph, in 1982.

Father James Cuddy, O.P., had served as head chaplain at Providence College since 2009. He earlier was a parochial vicar at a parish in Louisville, Ky. He was ordained for the Dominican Fathers, Province of St. Joseph, in 2007.

Temporary Administrator

Father Abraham Berko, who was incardinated into the archdiocese last April, had served as parochial vicar of St. Adalbert’s since 2013. He also served at Christ the King, the Bronx, 2007-2013, and Immaculate Conception, Amenia, 2003-2007. He was ordained in 1998 for the Diocese of Sunyani in his native Ghana.

Parochial Vicars

Father Ransford Clarke had served as parochial vicar of Immaculate Conception-Assumption parish, Tuckahoe, since 2012. He also served at St. Joseph of the Holy Family, Harlem, 2011-2012. He was ordained in 2011.

Father Lorenzo Laboy had served as parochial vicar of St. Elizabeth’s, Washington Heights, since his ordination in 2013.
