Father Daniel J. O’Brien, S.J., who served at Fordham University for 24 years, died Nov. 9 at Murray-Weigel Hall on the Fordham campus. He was 90.

Father O’Brien was at Fordham, 1992-2001, 1977-1982 and 1965-1975. He taught math at Loyola School, Manhattan, 1975-1977, while also serving as assistant director of the Jesuit Seminary and Mission Bureau, Manhattan.

He taught math at the Jesuit Philosophate, Shrub Oak, 1965-1975, and was minister at Murray-Weigel Hall, 1969-1973. He also served in Brooklyn, Rochester, Syracuse and Maryland.

Father O’Brien, who retired in 2011, resided at Murray-Weigel since 2014.

Born in Hoboken, N.J., he entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) at St. Andrew-on-Hudson in Poughkeepsie in 1946. He was ordained to the priesthood at Fordham in 1959, and professed final vows in 1964.

He earned his bachelor’s degree from Fordham, and his master’s from the University of Notre Dame. He completed his studies in theology at Woodstock College in Maryland.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated Nov. 14 in the Murray-Weigel Hall Chapel. Burial was in Jesuit Cemetery, Auriesville.
