Father James R. Carney, S.J.

Father James R. Carney, S.J., who spent almost his entire priesthood serving the students and alumni of Regis High School, Manhattan, died May 28 at Murray-Weigel Hall, the Bronx. He was 87.

He served as director of alumni relations for Regis from 1977 until his retirement in 2002. Before that he was director of development and moderator of the Regis Alumni Association, 1969-1976. He taught Latin, English, math and religion there, 1950-1953 and 1958-1969. He also coached freshman and JV varsity basketball and moderated several student clubs.

Born in New York City, he entered the Society of Jesus at St. Andrew-on-Hudson, Poughkeepsie, after his graduation from Regis High School in 1943. He also studied at West Baden College, Ind., and at Weston College, Mass. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1956.

After his retirement, he assisted at the Jesuit Seminary bureau and with parish work until 2007 when he was assigned to Murray-Weigel because of his health.

After a wake at the Regis High School Chapel, a Funeral Mass was offered June 4 at St. Ignatius Loyola Church. Burial was at the Jesuit cemetery at Auriesville.
