Father Raymond Hand, O.F.M. Cap.

Father Raymond Hand, O.F.M. Cap., who served as pastor of a parish in East Harlem and directed a New York City agency that treated people with drug addictions, died Jan. 12 at Holy Name Friary in Ringwood, N.J. He was 77.

He was director of E.N.T.E.R. (Ecumenical Narcotics Treatment for Effective Rehabilitation) for nearly 15 years.

He was pastor and guardian of Our Lady Queen of Angels, East Harlem, 1982-1984, where he had been a parochial vicar, 1963-1964.

Father Hand also served at St. John the Baptist parish, Manhattan, 1984-1994. He also served in East Patchogue and in Massachusetts.

He served as provincial councilor of Capuchin Franciscans’ Province of St. Mary, 1981-1984.

Born in Yonkers, he entered the Capuchin Franciscans in 1954 and professed final vows in 1958. He was ordained to the priesthood at Sacred Heart Church, Yonkers, in 1962.

Surviving is a sister, Joyce Adams. A Funeral Mass was offered Jan. 15 at Sacred Heart Church, Yonkers. Burial was in the province cemetery.
