Alan P. Mehldau

Alan P. Mehldau, a dedicated pro-life leader in the archdiocese, died June 22 at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco. He was 80.

After retiring, Mr. Mehldau co-founded and chaired the Center for Life, located in St. Mary’s School in Katonah. He also served as chairman of the Westchester and Putnam Right to Life Committee, the Northern Westchester and Putnam Vicariate Respect Life Committee and St. Mary’s Respect Life Society and was a board member of the New York State Right to Life Committee.

He taught religious education to eighth-graders at St. Mary’s parish for more than 25 years and served as chairman of the parish council, and he was an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion and a driver for “Operation Daily Bread.” He also was a Third-Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

Mr. Mehldau, a longtime resident of South Salem, worked 30 years for the New York Racing Association as assistant and acting manager of Aqueduct and Saratoga racetracks, and 10 years as manager of Belmont Racetrack. He retired as vice president of properties in 1994.

Born in Brooklyn, he grew up in Garden City, Long Island. He received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Villanova University in Pennsylvania and a master’s in business administration in management from Adelphi University. He served three years with the U.S. Navy as a destroyer engineering officer and completed his Navy career in the reserves, retiring as a captain.

Mr. Mehldau was predeceased by his beloved wife of 47 years, Margaret (Pam), and is survived by their son, Alan Jr., and a grandson; a sister, Carol A. Tighe; and a brother, Carl.

A Funeral Mass was offered June 27 at St. Mary of the Assumption Church. Interment was at South Salem Cemetery.
