The 79th annual General Casimir Pulaski Memorial Parade stepped off along Fifth Avenue in Manhattan in the early afternoon of Oct. 2 under the theme “Polish-American Youth, in Honor of World Youth Day in Krakow, Poland.” The grand marshal was Dr. Donna Koch-Kapturski, a physician from New Jersey who is the daughter of Polish immigrants. In 2003, she was elected by the General Casimir Pulaski Memorial Parade Committee Inc. as its vice-president and served as executive vice-president for five years.

The parade commemorates the sacrifice of General Casimir Pulaski, a native of Poland commonly known as the father of the American Cavalry, for his service in the American Revolutionary War. Prior to the parade, Auxiliary Bishop Andrzej Zglejszewski of Rockville Centre served as principal celebrant of an early-morning Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan. Bishop Zglejszewski was born and raised in Poland.
