Eric Yost scattered three hits, struck out six and walked none over seven innings to lead Fordham Prep to a 4-0 victory over Archbishop Stepinac in the CHSAA AA city championship baseball game at St. John’s University in Queens June 6.

Yost, a junior righthander who has verbally committed to attend Northeastern University in Boston, had an RBI single in Fordham Prep’s four-run fifth inning, which also included an RBI single from Patrick Dillon, a sacrifice fly by Aidan Curry and an RBI groundout from Alfredo Delgado.

Archbishop Stepinac loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the sixth inning, but Yost escaped with a strikeout and double play.

“He’s a bulldog on the mound,” Fordham Prep coach Pat Deane told CNY. “He pounds the zone. He has nice velocity on his fastball, a good breaking ball and he hits his spots. Nothing phases him.”

Fordham Prep, which won its first CHSAA title since 2009, finished the season with a 22-4 overall record.

“Baseball is the hardest title to win,” Deane said. “We had to win seven games to win this one. They’re a lot of great teams out there.”

The Rams will lose 12 of its 27 players to graduation.

“They were a very tight-knit group,” said Deane. “Everybody knew their role and filled these roles very well.”
