One need only Google the name Flannery O’Connor to find several images of the writer. Several of these pictures show Ms. O’Connor without her glasses. For George Weigel (CNY, Aug. 20), it appears that only the most unflattering image would have sufficed for the U.S. postal stamp.
One of the images on the Google site is the very one the postal service artist used as his/her inspiration. All right, the artist did pretty her up a bit (not exactly Vogue). Mr. Weigel takes this as an affront to Ms. O’Connor’s Catholic realism. I am just glad to see that her image was chosen at all to be on a stamp! Lighten up, Mr. Weigel.
