Louis V. Gerstner III, president of the Gerstner Family Foundation, a major benefactor of the Church and the archdiocese, died Aug. 14 in a choking incident while dining at a restaurant. He was 41.

Cardinal Egan offered the Funeral Mass Aug. 19 at St. Vincent Ferrer Church in Manhattan.

The Gerstner family and foundation provide substantial financial support to the Partnership for Inner-City Education and Patrons Program, which develop Catholic elementary schools that provide students from low-income families with the academic preparation, values and skills they need to break the cycle of poverty and lead productive lives.

The Gerstners support educational and enrichment programs for a school of more than 300 students in the Bronx as well as more than 375 scholarships both at archdiocesan inner-city Catholic high schools and elementary schools in the Bronx and Manhattan, and an after-school program at an inner-city elementary school in the Bronx that serves more than 100 students.

Born in Greenwich, Conn., Mr. Gerstner was raised in St. Michael the Archangel parish there. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Princeton University and a master’s in business administration from Columbia University Business School.

He is survived by two daughters, Grace and Olivia; his parents, Louis V. Jr. and Robin Gerstner, and a sister, Dr. Elizabeth Gerstner. Burial was at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Greenwich, Conn.
