Mother Cabrini Health Foundation Now Accepting Grant Inquiries

The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation, a new foundation dedicated to supporting the underserved populations of New York, this month opened an online portal for its grants program. It will accept letters of inquiry for eligible applicants through May 9.

The foundation will grant up to $150 million annually to improve the health and well-being of vulnerable New Yorkers, bolster the health outcomes of diverse communities, eliminate barriers to care and bridge gaps in health services. The $3.2 billion foundation is one of the largest in the United States and the largest foundation focused exclusively on New York state.

The foundation originated from the sale of Fidelis Care, a nonprofit health insurer started and operated by the bishops of the Catholic dioceses of New York. Fidelis Care, which was under the bishops’ oversight for more than 20 years, grew to become one of the highest-rated, most successful insurers in New York and created the opportunity for Mother Cabrini Health Foundation to continue to address generational health disparities.

Also this month, the foundation announced its executive leadership team, which is led by Msgr. Gregory Mustaciuolo, the chief executive officer, who is a priest of the archdiocese and most recently served as vicar general and chancellor of the archdiocese.

Other leadership team members include Colin Ambrose, chief investment officer; David Horne, chief financial officer; Deborah Konopko, chief programs and grants officer; Channon Lucas, chief administrative officer and a former vice chancellor of the archdiocese; and Linzie Steinbach, chief compliance officer.

The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation is committed to supporting activities, programs and initiatives that enhance access to affordable quality health care and address the unmet health care needs of communities across New York state. The foundation is seeking to increase health care access in underserved communities, including low-income individuals and families, older adults, immigrants and migrant workers, formerly incarcerated individuals, persons with special needs, veterans, young children, pregnant women and new mothers, and youth and young adults.

The foundation is named in honor of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, an Italian nun who worked tirelessly to advocate for all those in need. At the time of her death in 1917, she had founded 67 schools, hospitals and orphanages spanning the United States, Europe, and Central and South America.
