Sister Rhea Bean, R.S.M.

Sister Rhea Bean, R.S.M., a former president of St. Catharine Academy in the Bronx, died Sept. 26 at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx. She was 79.

Sister Rhea served as acting principal and president at St. Catharine’s Academy, 1999-2001. The academy started a scholarship fund in her name.

She was a first-grade teacher at Sacred Heart School, the Bronx, 1962-1963, and also served in Saranac Lake, Rouses Point and Plattsburgh.

Sister Rhea also served on the new membership team for her order, 1996-1998. She was vocations director, 1992-1996; provincial administrator, 1984-1992; and a member of the leadership team, 1978-1984.

Born in Enosburg Falls, Vt., she entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1957 and professed final vows in 1965.

Her brothers, Daniel, David, Larry and Philip, survive her. A Funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 1 in Marian Woods Chapel, Hartsdale. Burial was in St. Alphonsus Cemetery, Tupper Lake.
