New Yorkers to Attend Eucharistic Congress In the Philippines

Cardinal Dolan and Brooklyn Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio will lead a group of New York pilgrims to the Philippines for the International Eucharistic Congress.
The congress, held every four years, will take place in Cebu, Sunday, Jan. 24, through Sunday, Jan. 31. The festivities open on a major religious feast day in the Philippines, the feast of the Holy Child, or Santo Nino.
Cardinal Dolan, in remarks to CNY after the annual Respect Life Mass in St. Patrick’s Cathedral Jan. 17, said that he has “a real appreciation for the gift of the Filipino people in the United States.” He was invited to be a speaker at the congress.
Sixty people from the archdiocese and the Diocese of Brooklyn will be traveling to the congress with the tour company Peter’s Way Tours Inc. More than 15,000 people from 90 countries around the world are expected to attend. The congress theme is “Christ in you, our hope of glory.”
Archbishop Jose S. Palma of Cebu told reporters at the Vatican in October that the congress would include reflections on hope and mercy, as well as about the inclusion of the poor and marginalized. The theme also promotes a strong missionary thrust that for Catholics in Asia takes the form of dialogue with other cultures and religions.
