Old Cathedral Mass May 13 For Witness of Apparition

Cardinal Dolan has asked the faithful of the archdiocese to a Requiem Mass he is celebrating for a man who witnessed an apparition nearly 140 years ago.

“In 1879, John Curry witnessed an apparition of the Blessed Virgin, St. Joseph and St. John the Evangelist in Knock, Ireland. Later in life, John moved to New York, fell on harder times and was buried in a communal grave,” Cardinal Dolan said in an April 28 flocknote.

“We believe Mr. Curry deserves a proper Catholic burial—and so, on Saturday, May 13, I invite you to attend a special Requiem Mass for John Curry, followed by his reinterment at St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral Cemetery,” located at Mott and Prince Streets in Lower Manhattan.

The liturgy begins at 11 a.m. at the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral at the same address.

Also participating will be Father Richard Gibbons, rector of the Shrine of Knock in Ireland, and pilgrims from Erin.

Both the Requiem Mass and the interment are open to the public.
