Port Chester Parish Community Now Known As St. John Bosco After Canonical Merger

The decree of canonical merger of the parishes of Our Lady of Mercy-Sacred Heart of Jesus and Corpus Christi-Our Lady of the Rosary, Port Chester, became effective Aug. 1.

Cardinal Dolan has approved a new parish name that was recommended by the parishioners. The new parish community is known as The Parish of St. John Bosco, also effective Aug. 1.

Father Patrick Angelucci, S.D.B., who had served as pastor of Corpus Christi-Our Lady of the Rosary, is the pastor of the new Salesian-run parish.

While the legal name of the parish is The Parish of St. John Bosco, each of the above named churches will retain its name to acknowledge the history of each location. The civil incorporation is scheduled to take effect Sept. 1.

The plans for the merger began to take shape as part of the Making All Things New pastoral planning initiative, announced in November 2014. After more than six months of additional discussion and review, the first phase of parish mergers in Port Chester took effect Aug. 1, 2015, when Corpus Christi and Our Lady of the Rosary merged, as did Sacred Heart of Jesus and Our Lady of Mercy.

At that time, it was announced that the second phase would be completed Aug. 1, 2017, with the merger of Corpus Christi-Our Lady of the Rosary and Our Lady of Mercy-Sacred Heart of Jesus.
