Public Notice by the Archdiocese of New York

The opportunity for peaceful public assembly is a constitutionally protected hallmark of our American democracy. There are also rules that govern such assemblies.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral, as the seat of our archdiocese, is identified with the Catholic Church in both the religious and public perceptions. An assembly or protest outside the cathedral is allowed on the public sidewalk there, within the limits and permitting process of the New York Police Department to retain order and freedom of movement. The steps of the cathedral, which are part of the cathedral’s property, are off limits for any such assembly.
