Remember the Elderly

Posted

To the Editor:

As a longtime advocate for elder persons, especially the fast-growing, 85-plus age group, I am very concerned that the Synod on Families will give this group too little attention. Those participating may not know the many problems faced by elder people because they are so neglected by media.

For example, to my knowledge, in the so-called “media capital of the world,” only Catholic New York published Pope Francis’ 2014 warning against “neglect of the elderly,” which he spoke about at a Mass and special encounter with them in St. Peter’s Square last fall.  Other media only covered issues related to divorce and sexuality also discussed in that Vatican forum.
