Sister Alice Gallin, O.S.U., a teacher and administrator for 28 years at the College of New Rochelle, died Sept. 13 in Hastings-on-Hudson. She was 96.

Sister Alice served at the College of New Rochelle, 1950-1978, where she held the title scholar-in-residence.

“I wanted to be a teacher. In college, I had come to love history and so I started right in on my master’s in history that summer while I was teaching my first year,” Sister Alice said in an interview marking her 70th anniversary with the Ursuline Sisters of the Eastern Province.

Sister Alice served the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, 1976-1992, becoming its executive director.

She researched the history of American Catholic higher education and wrote many books, articles and papers on the subject. She received 21 honorary degrees.

Sister Alice served on the board of trustees of the University of Notre Dame, Iona College, Viterbo College in LaCrosse, Wis., and St. Bonaventure University, Olean, where she was interim president, 1993-1994.

She had a key role in the publication and implementation of “Ex Corde Ecclesiae,” St. Pope John II’s apostolic constitution on Catholic universities. She also was director of research for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee for the bicentennial program, “Liberty and Justice for All.”

Born in Manhattan, she entered the Ursuline Sisters in 1946 and professed final vows in 1951.

She earned a bachelor’s degree from the College of New Rochelle, New Rochelle; a master’s from Fordham University, and a doctorate from The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.

A Funeral Mass was offered Sept. 17 at Holy Family Church, New Rochelle. Burial was in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, New Rochelle.
