Sister Alice Madeline Smith, O.P.

Sister Alice Madeline Smith, O.P., who served as a chaplain at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx for 20 years, died Nov. 21 at Siena Hall in Dominican Convent in Sparkill. She was 86.

Sister Alice Madeline was at Calvary Hospital, 1981-2001. She was a teacher and an administrative assistant at Msgr. Scanlan High School, the Bronx, 1967-1981. She also taught Albertus Magnus High School, Bardonia, 1960-1967, and St. Brendan School, the Bronx, 1953-1958.

Sister Alice Madeline also served in Syracuse, and at Dowling Gardens and Siena Hall, both in Sparkill, before retiring in 2015.

Born in Manhattan, she entered the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill in 1951 and professed final vows in 1958.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Fordham University, and a master’s in social studies from St. John’s University. She also held a certificate in theological pastoral education from St. Vincent’s Medical Center, Manhattan.

Her sister, Teresa O’Neill, survives her.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated Nov. 28 in Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel, Sparkill. Burial was in St. Agnes Cemetery, Sparkill.
