Sister Barbara Ann Walenty, M.M., who served for many years in nursing, died Oct. 24 at Maryknoll Sisters Center in Ossining. She was 90.

Most recently, she did family ministry and pastoral work in Fraser, Mich., 2008-2014.

She served in Chicago’s Chinatown as a religious education teacher and art instructor for children, 1999-2008. Also in Chicago, she worked at the Maryknoll Sisters’ Midwest educational and promotion office, 1995-1997, and served as a school nurse, a teacher’s aide and taught alcohol and drug prevention education, 1979-1986.

While living in Manhattan’s Chinatown, she served at Cabrini Hospital nursing home and Maryknoll Sisters Center Health Services, 1976-1978. At Maryknoll Sisters Center, she served in support services, 1973-1974, and as a hospitality coordinator and laundry worker, 1959-1960.

As a missioner to Hong Kong, she studied Cantonese and served in various nursing roles, 1963-1972.

Born in Detroit, she entered the Maryknoll Sisters in 1956 and made final vows in 1965. She earned an R.N. degree from Providence Hospital School of Nursing in Detroit.

She is survived by her brother, Donald. A Funeral Mass was offered Nov. 13 at Annunciation Chapel at Maryknoll Sisters Center. Burial was in Maryknoll Sisters Cemetery.
